What is a Moving Gutter System?
A moving gutter system is an efficient way to automate your leafy green growing process. It uses a gutter which is a narrow and long plastic channel to grow leafy greens via NFT (nutrient film technique). These gutters are dynamically spaced as the plant grows. This means at the beginning of the lane gutters are spaced next to each other, and at the other end gutters are spaced at their harvest spacing, between these points the gutters are spaced relative to their size. Growers have full control to schedule which crops are seeded and harvested.
Fully Automated Moving Gutter System
The Fully Automated style is a flexible platform that caters to large growers who want to maximize efficiency, with options ranging from full automation of seeding to pack. In this system trays are loaded into a vertical table system for propagation and automatically transplanted into clean gutters. Gutters are conveyed to and from a desired lane and harvested automatically. Once washed, the clean gutters are stored in a buffer line– waiting for the chance to be used for a new leafy green transplant.
Semi Auto Moving Gutter Systems
The Semi Auto style is catered to growers seeking the yield improvements that come from a moving gutter system while minimizing capital expenditure. These systems utilize trays to grow propagation plants on rolling benches at the beginning of the house and a moving gutter system to grow plants to maturity on the other end. Between the benches and gutter system plants are manually transplanted into gutters. At the harvest end, product is manually removed, gutters are cleaned and returned to the beginning of the lane via a gutter return trolley.
Vertical Farming
For operators looking to scale vertically, there are options to grow using the moving gutter system in a vertical configuration. The system utilizes elevators on both ends of the lane to insert and harvest gutters from each tier. Racks are used to support the gutters.
